December 2000

Hi Sweetie     12/01/2000?  (sent 12/16/200
It's 3:00 in the afternoon and I'm in the chalet and Win just came in from a hike on the mountain. The rest are still out there but should be back soon. Yesterday the drive from Christchurch to here was beautiful. Everyone else did some riding ranging in distance from 45 to 65 kilometers. When we got to the high country we drove along 2 lakes that had the prettiest blue/green water I've ever seen. Just out of Christchurch we began to see the snow capped mountains but when we got to the range that has Mt Cook at its crest there was a noticeable difference  Mt Cook village is just that; a tourist village at the base of Mt Cook. There are several restaurants, hotel/motels, gift shops, information centers, tour booking stores, etc. No bank or ATMs though. When I got here yesterday I was almost broke so when we went to dinner last night I paid for everyone's dinner on my visa and they paid me in cash.
Yesterday I spent NZ $160.00 on gifts for Caitlin and mailed it this morning from here. If you want any gifts for Christmas for anyone I might remind you this is the last country I'll be in before returning home. Wool or even artificial fleece jackets, sweaters, or pullovers are expensive here. I may find them cheaper in Queenstown although we have been told that things are more expensive there. I need a warm jacket and I shopped for one in Christchurch but found them too costly.  I think things may not be as expensive as they would seem if I was coming from the US to New Zealand. Coming from Asia and eight dollar robes and twenty-five cent beers makes adjusting difficult.
Tomorrow we drive to Queenstown and I had hoped to ride my bike, but Win just told me that heavy rains are predicted for tomorrow. Good thing we have the vehicles to sag in. I could have ridden yesterday but it was cool and I knew if the clouds blocked the sun it would get extremely cool. They didn't and it turned into one of those days. A scenic sun-warm, air-cool, wide-mouth full-grin day. I enjoyed driving the camper van by myself though and stopped several times to take pictures.
When we went to check in yesterday we ran into JT. a former O2Ker. He had bought a bus ticket for NZ$260.00 that went to all the touristy places in NZ and drops you off. You can stay as long as you want, the tickets last for three months. There is a bus that comes by everyday so you can stay as long as you want in any one place and just book the bus when you're ready to leave. The only restriction is that the bus goes only in one direction, but you can bypass places you don't want to see. Sounds like a great way for us to see NZ. We can rent bikes almost everywhere and there are guided tours. In Wanaka there is a tour company that will drive or helicopter you to the top of a mountain and guide you back down on mountain bikes. I may do that if it's not raining.
I'll see if I can connect now and send this. ..................just for me

Hi Sweetie
The pictures are from Lake Tekapo, located on the road between Christchurch and Mt Cook. The second picture is of Win, Margherita, and myself after we had climbed a trail above Mt Cook Village.

Hi Sweetie   12/0?/2000   (sent 12/16/2000)

I drove  here with Win, Dave, and Margherita though it was a sunny day. This morning we hiked to the Franz Josef Glacier. (Picture.) We're staying at the Alpine Lodge and there is a telephone so I'll try to connect. In one week I'll be home. I can't wait to see everyone and see myself respond to the questions they'll have for me. I wonder how hard it will be to rejoin society and resume a normal lifestyle.

See you soon   Love Randal

Hi Sweetie  12/05/2000
Today we drove from Qtown to Te Anau and we just arrived. 12:20 PM.
This computer is in the lodge office. My time is running out so I'll send
this and get some change and e-mail you again.

Hi Ruthie  12/05/2000
Remember what happened with my tickets in Singapore?  Phil and Shirley  (Phil and Shirley are part of the group Randal joined for the New Zealand trip.) had their tickets sent to the university in Christchurch and Pat, (of)  TK&A picked up all the mail of the people who were no longer with O2K and took it with her, including their tickets. Fortunately they figured out what happened and called Tim Kneeland in Queenstown and they left the tickets there so they could be picked up when we arrived.
This part of NZ reminds me of Norway. The water in the lakes and Fiords
never gets warm so air is cool while the sun is warm. This would be a great
place to spend Dec., Jan., and Feb. The cost of living right now is cheap
because the US dollar is so strong.  I like it here, the mountains are
gorgeous and the people are nice and trustworthy. There are lots of
accommodations for tourist including hotels, cabins, camping, rental vehicles
like cars, motor homes and vans, and there are tours and adventures for
everyone. You can go fishing, skydiving, parasailing, hang gliding, bungee
jumping, gold panning, four-wheeling, hiking, and cycling, just to name a
few.
Day after tomorrow we go to Wanaka. There I'm planning on booking a tour that takes you and a mountain bike to the top of a mountain and you ride across glaciers and 20 kilometers back down to town. Sounds like fun.
Talk to you tomorrow.                                                                                Love  Randal

Hi Sweetie  12/08/2000
I'm in Wanaka.  I talked to you this afternoon while riding into town. (Randal was literally talking to me as he was riding his bike!)
Tomorrow we ride to McKarora, 60K away.  I cooked dinner for the group
tonight and got a round of applause. I cooked spaghetti, pretty simple.  In
the morning I volunteered to drive one of the vehicles so after touring
around here for awhile;  they have a warplane museum;  I will head out and
park the van at the destination and ride back to meet everybody.  I really
felt good today.  I guess the rest did me good.
I'll cook for whomever you want me to. How could anyone dare criticize me, after all, I have a certificate from a Thai cooking school and most people
haven't eaten authentic Thai cooking anyway.

Randal

Hi Sweetie  12/08/2000
I just got off the phone;  it was nice to hear your voice, unfortunately you
couldn't hear me.( My cell phone doesn't work in this remote region either.) I don't know if it was a problem with the pay-phone I was using or the connection.
I'll try again tomorrow.
I drove the camper van to here today from Wanaka and then rode back to meet the rest. I got in about 50 K.  The ride was mostly along a beautiful lake. There are lakes all over this part of NZ.  I think when we come back we should plan on at least three months.  I picked up a hitch-hiker today. He was from S-Korea. Very well educated. He has been here for three months. The first 10 weeks were spent in an English class in Auckland. I thought he could speak English very well.
Just a few more days and I will be an ordinary citizen again. But I'm
looking forward to it.

 Randal

Hi Sweetie           Sun. Dec 10 8:46 AM
Win, Dave, Margherita, and I are signing up for a plane ride, a three hour
hike, and a boat ride.  It's called the Siberian Experience. The other four (members of the New Zealand group) are on their way to Franz Joseph Glacier. They had to go ahead to get Judy to a bus so she can get to the airport to catch her plane. We will catch up with them tomorrow night.
We're getting ready to go.

Randal

Hi Sweetie   12/10/2000
Win, Dave, Margherita and I just arrived at the cabin site and I'm in the
registration office. There doesn't seem to be much to do here. Win and I
rode 54 K this morning out of Haast into a headwind.  Dave and Margherita
picked us up in the van and we all drove here. There is not much on the west
coast of NZ.
One week from tomorrow I'll be home. I hope I can change the lifestyle
I've fallen into the last few weeks. If I don't stop eating I'll weigh 200
lbs by spring.
